The early interceptive orthodontics treatment process

Step 1

To determine whether early treatment is necessary, our expert team will take X-rays, perform an exam, and gain a comprehensive understanding of your child’s overall oral health.

Step 2

If Dr. G notices any issues, she’ll create a custom treatment plan. Braces, space maintainers, palate expanders, and appliances to help with thumb-sucking are just a few options that may be recommended.

Step 3

As your child progresses through treatment, they’ll return for regular check-ups with Dr. G to ensure everything is going smoothly. While every child is different, most treatments take about 12 months to complete.

Benefits of early interceptive orthodontics

Corrects Misalignments

When adult teeth erupt in the right places, there’s a much lower chance of experiencing crooked teeth, gaps, and other issues. Early interceptive orthodontics can help promote healthy alignment as your child’s jaws grow and teeth emerge.

Prevents Problems

Getting care early is a great way to correct serious orthodontic problems before they solidify in your child’s smile. In some cases, braces or further orthodontic treatment may not even be necessary after early treatment is complete, because your child’s smile will already be in alignment.

Promotes Bite

If your child has serious jaw issues or a narrow palate, early interceptive treatment can help develop a healthy bite. Orthodontic care can prevent speech impediments, premature tooth wear, and a variety of other problems.

Frequently asked questions

What causes orthodontic problems in my child?

Over time, thumbsucking, using a pacifier, and other habits can cause orthodontic issues to form. There are also many other factors that can alter your child’s teeth and jaw alignment. Genetics, mouth breathing, poor oral hygiene, accidents, abnormal swallowing, early or late loss of baby teeth, and poor nutrition are just a few of the many forces that can create orthodontic problems in your child. Dr. G specializes in treating a wide variety of issues and will craft a custom treatment plan that aligns with their unique needs.

At what age should my child be seen by an orthodontist?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, you should schedule your child’s first orthodontic visit by the age of seven, or anytime you notice an orthodontic issue before then. At age seven, your child's mouth will have developed enough permanent teeth for Dr. G to gain a solid understanding of their mouth and jaws.

How do I know if my child needs early orthodontic treatment?

Signs include early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, and misaligned teeth.
